What It Is
Mercury is a heavy metal and potent neurotoxicant (elemental, inorganic, and the especially toxic organic form methylmercury). One of the canonical 'heavy metals' invoked in toxicity discussions.
Mechanism & Notes
- Binds thiol (-SH) groups avidly — depletes glutathione and inhibits selenoenzymes, driving oxidative stress
- Methylmercury crosses the blood-brain barrier and placenta; classic developmental neurotoxicant

One study found autistic children had 30-fold higher plasma nickel levels than controls….
